Biography
Charles has specialised in the area of intellectual property for more than 20 years, and is consistently recognised for his expertise in copyright and privacy. He regularly advises major newspapers, magazine publishers and entertainment industry associations on strategies to commercialise and protect their copyright. Charles also acts for government and non-government schools, and subscription television broadcasters, on copyright licensing issues and in Copyright Tribunal proceedings, and has assisted many clients in the preparation of government submissions on copyright legislation.
With the introduction of Australia's privacy legislation, Charles formed and continues to lead the firm's Privacy team. He has also played a key role developing the firm's privacy compliance tools.
In addition to his privacy and copyright expertise, Charles has considerable experience in the enforcement and protection of IP rights.
He also assists clients in advertising disputes and advises on trade practices and regulatory consumer protection issues relevant to marketing activities. Most recently he has been advising SingTel Optus in this area.
Charles is a member of the Copyright Society, the Intellectual Property Committee and Privacy Working Party of the Law Council of Australia as well as the Licensing Executive Society.
