ITNewcom plays integral role in Transport for NSW's efforts to ease Sydney traffic congestion

ITNewcom, the market leading IT management consulting arm of law firm MinterEllison, has assisted Transport for NSW (TfNSW) through a highly complex sourcing process to find its new transport management system – a key component to making passenger journeys more reliable and reducing the cost of congestion.

The system, known as the Enhanced Core Transport Management System (ECTMS), is the centrepiece of the NSW Government’s Intelligent Congestion Management Program (ICMP).

The ICMP plans for future transport, including the need to support the rate of development across the city, ease congestion, improve coordination across all modes of transport and provide the best incident response plans.

A multi-disciplined ITNewcom team, led by Executive Director Simon Lewis and Director Stuart Ritchie, played an integral role in the year-long sourcing process working alongside TfNSW in the development and execution of the sourcing strategy, development and management of the RFP to market, support for the evaluation of vendor responses and negotiation of commercial outcomes.

Mr Lewis said that ITNewcom has a privileged role in helping to shape TfNSW digital capability, and contributing to the vision of a world leading intelligent transport management system for the state.

"Our multi-disciplinary team at ITNewcom worked with TfNSW to identify and source the new ECTMS that will improve situation awareness, strengthen incident response times, provide greater overall network efficiency, and increase levels of coordination across multiple modes of transport," said Mr Lewis.

"The data gathered by the new ECTMS will help inform passengers and customers about disruptions and alternative routes."

The current system was originally developed to support the Sydney 2000 Olympics and the transport network requirements at the time.

“TfNSW’s vision for managing traffic congestion goes beyond what is available anywhere in the world today," said Mr Ritchie. "To get the best outcome for TfNSW we needed to find the right team of vendors, and then strike a balance (in the resulting agreement) between enabling partnership and collaboration, while still appropriately mitigating TfNSW’s delivery risks. I believe we've achieved this.”
