Celebrating green flags in LGBTQ+ relationships

3 minute read  24.02.2025

As we reflect on Mardi Gras 2025, MinterEllison celebrates recognising 'green flags' in LGBTQ+ relationships, highlighting open communication, mutual respect, support for each other's goals, shared values, healthy conflict resolution and inclusivity.

In 2025, MinterEllison proudly continues its partnership with the LGBTQ Domestic Violence Awareness Foundation, supporting the Sydney Gay & Lesbian Mardi Gras Parade for the second consecutive year. This collaboration reflects a shared commitment to raising awareness about domestic, family and intimate partner violence and supporting the LGBTQ+ community. As part of this initiative, we celebrate the positive signs, or "green flags," that indicate healthy and supportive relationships.

In the journey of love and companionship, recognising positive signs, or "green flags," is crucial for building a healthy and supportive partnership. For any relationship, these green flags can be particularly significant, as they often reflect mutual respect, understanding, and shared values. Here are some key green flags to look for:

Open communication

Effective communication is the cornerstone of any healthy relationship. In LGBTQ+ relationships, this means being able to discuss feelings, boundaries, and experiences openly and honestly. Partners who listen actively and validate each other’s emotions create a safe space for growth and connection.

Mutual respect

Respecting each other’s identities, pronouns, and boundaries is essential. This includes understanding and honouring each other’s experiences and challenges related to their LGBTQ+ identities. A partner who respects your individuality and supports your journey is a true green flag.

Supportive of each other’s goals

A healthy relationship involves supporting each other’s personal and professional aspirations. Whether it’s career goals, hobbies, or personal growth, partners who encourage and celebrate each other’s achievements foster a positive and empowering dynamic.

Shared values and interests

While differences can add richness to a relationship, having shared values and interests can strengthen the bond. This might include common views on social issues, similar hobbies, or aligned life goals. Shared values create a foundation of understanding and mutual respect.

Healthy conflict resolution

Disagreements are natural in any relationship, but how they are handled makes all the difference. Green flags include partners who approach conflicts with a willingness to understand, compromise, and find solutions together. This demonstrates maturity and a commitment to the relationship.

Emotional and physical intimacy

Feeling emotionally and physically safe with your partner is vital. This includes being able to express affection, share vulnerabilities, and maintain a healthy physical relationship. A partner who respects your boundaries and makes you feel cherished is a positive sign.

Inclusivity and Acceptance: A partner who is inclusive and accepting of your friends, family, and community is a strong green flag. This shows that they value your social connections and are willing to integrate into your life fully. Inclusivity fosters a sense of belonging and mutual respect.

Commitment to growth

A relationship thrives when both partners are committed to personal and mutual growth. This includes being open to feedback, learning from mistakes, and striving to improve the relationship. In any relationship, a partner who is dedicated to growing together is a valuable asset.

Advocacy and allyship

In LGBTQ+ relationships, having a partner who is an advocate and ally can be incredibly affirming. This means standing up against discrimination, supporting LGBTQ+ rights, and being an active participant in the community. Advocacy strengthens the bond and promotes a sense of solidarity.

Recognising these green flags can help you build strong, healthy, and fulfilling relationships, particularly within the LGBTQ+ community. With open communication, mutual respect, and shared values, you can create a partnership that is supportive, empowering, and full of love. A healthy relationship is a journey of growth and mutual support, and these green flags are the signposts guiding you along the way.
