Sustainability in operations, supply chains and communities

Environmental sustainability

MinterEllison understands that to reach the global decarbonisation targets set out under the Paris Agreement the global economy needs to transition to Net Zero Greenhouse Gas emissions before 2050, catalysed by significant emissions reductions in the short-to-medium term.

We are committed to transitioning our own operations, and in consultation with the Science Based Target Initiative (SBTi) we are in the process of setting science-based targets to reduce Scope 1 and Scope 2 emissions by 2030. This work builds on the foundations established over the last five years including three Climate Active Certifications (Carbon Neutral Organisation) and recently undertaking detailed net zero modelling.

We understand that reducing our Scope 3 emissions will require a strengthened focus and we are determined to continue reducing our Scope 3 emissions year on year and to engage with the SBTi to set a meaningful Scope 3 emissions reduction target in 2030. We have achieved our interim target for all offices to operate on renewable energy where available by 2025.

We understand that fulfilling this aspiration will require significant changes to operational ‘business as usual’.  We will therefore continue to review and refresh our emissions reductions program annually, to measure our material emissions sources, analyse and prioritise opportunities for emissions reduction, and assess, validate and report on our progress.

This commitment is aligned with our Responsible Business Statement and ensures that in all aspects of our operations MinterEllison focuses on sound environmental practices, minimising our use of resources where possible and maximising our re-use of resources. We are committed to continually measuring our impact on the environment working with specialist GHG consultants.

MinterEllison is recognised for its leadership in advising clients on climate change and the transition to a low-carbon economy. We continue to use our leading expertise in this area to support our clients across all industries in that transition.

In addition to our Climate Active certification we are also members of the Australian Legal Sector Alliance (AusLSA) and participate in regular AusLSA roundtables sharing best practice and insights relevant to our industry. We continue to report annually on the major activities we take toward the reduction of carbon emissions. AusLSA's mission is to work collaboratively to promote sustainable practices across the legal sector. MinterEllison has continued to strive to reduce, recycle, and reuse during the years under review.
