Energy sector consultant and executive Joao Segorbe has joined MinterEllison as a Partner in their ESG consulting practice.
His appointment boosts MinterEllison's multidisciplinary ESG capabilities to support clients in solving their most complex ESG challenges. Segorbe will work closely with MinterEllison Partner and Head of Climate Change and Sustainability Sarah Barker, who was recently appointed joint Chair of the World Economic Forum key climate governance body, The Climate Governance Community of Experts. Barker is known for her leading expertise in climate change-related exposures under corporate and securities (rather than 'environmental') laws - including directors' fiduciary duties and financial reporting/disclosure obligations.
Segorbe has worked internationally across leading corporations in the ASX-30 and professional services organisations.
Before joining MinterEllison, he worked at AGL in the role of Executive General Manager of Strategy & Corporate Development and before AGL, he was Partner and Head of Electrical Power and Natural Gas practice in Australia and NZ at McKinsey & Co. He was also a member of McKinsey's Global Sustainability Practice.
MinterEllison CEO and Managing Partner Virginia Briggs said: "Joao's long-held focus on strategy and M&A in energy transition across all its dimensions will be of immense value to our clients, as will his perspective from his experience as an energy company executive and as an internationally experienced consultant. Clients need a holistic view of ESG, and Joao's experience across the two disciplines will provide the breadth of advice our clients require."
Segorbe brings 20+ years' experience to the firm in the energy sector - from deep technical expertise to commercial activity to people leadership – directly within the sector and with companies where energy and carbon are core to their activity. He has worked in energy markets in Australia and Europe and deeply understands ESG issues in the mining, resources and renewables sectors. He also has experience in governance and the regulatory environment in Australia and overseas.
"I am pleased to join MinterEllison and look forward to assisting institutions on their large-scale ESG-related transformation opportunities and challenges. ESG topics have become key issues across all sectors, with challenges emerging even faster than legislators have been developing in the field. MinterEllison is Australia's leading law firm, and I hope that my experience complements and adds to the team of experts dedicated to working side by side with our clients to stay ahead of the energy transition and dealing with ESG risks," said Segorbe.
Segorbe has an MBA from Northwestern University's Kellogg School of Management and a degree in Mechanical Engineering from Instituto Superior Técnico, Portugal.
