MinterEllison has shaken up the International Tax Review (ITR) Asia Awards 2018, taking out three of a possible nine awards.

A major event in the tax calendar, the annual awards celebrate the best tax and transfer pricing work across the Asia-Pacific.

Announced in Singapore last night, MinterEllison competed alongside the likes of EY, KPMG, Deloitte, Grant Thornton, Greenwoods & Freehills.

In the first year MinterEllison has been involved at the awards, the firm won the following categories:

  • Australia Tax Disputes & Litigation Firm of the Year
  • Australia Transfer Pricing Firm of the Year
  • Global Executive Mobility Tax Team of the Year in Asia

The firm's tax offering now boasts 15 partners and 70 staff, who are competing directly with global accounting firms – both in Australia and regionally.

The awards recognise MinterEllison's position at the forefront of the development of tax law in Australia through its conduct of landmark cases such as Chevron, and the work it continues to do in advising corporate taxpayers in their large transfer pricing and tax audits. This work will continue to test, and clarify, the application of Australia’s suite of legislation aimed at multinationals who do business in the region.

MinterEllison was represented at the awards by Carmen McElwain - National Tax Litigation and Controversy Leader, and Craig Silverwood – National Transfer Pricing Leader.

"We are particularly proud of this recognition by the ITR," said Ms McElwain. "The ITR Awards reflect the Asia-Pacific's leading thinkers across the tax marketplace, and it's an honour that we have been recognised amongst such renowned firms. It is also a reinforcement of what our clients continue to tell us - that we are differentiated from the big 4 because of our unique service offering and unparalleled experience, particularly in the area of tax litigation."

Ms McElwain added: "Winning three categories is a real testament to the important work which the team has done over the last year in significant matters, and is a reflection of why MinterEllison is regarded as one of the leading firms engaged in tax in the Asia-Pacific. Our clients recognise and value our unique blend of expertise across all areas in the tax continuum."

“These awards further demonstrate how our clients see us as directly competitive with global accounting firms, and not only law firms," said Mr Silverwood. "We now have specialist capability across a full range of tax services from international tax and transfer pricing, through to tax controversy and litigation."

In advance of the awards, MinterEllison was shortlisted in nine award categories – which represented nominations from the firm's entire national tax practice.
