Denis Gately

One of Australia‚Äôs most experienced and respected energy and resources lawyers, Denis Gately is a Brisbane-based consultant with Minter Ellison who has practised in the sector for more than 30 years.

He is a pre-eminent figure in the Australian coal industry, who has advised on exploration activities, mine development and mining operations in Queensland, New South Wales and Victoria. With significant experience in international oil and gas, Denis has advised on offshore and onshore exploration and production projects for natural gas, crude oil and coal seam methane in Australia, South East Asia and China.

Denis played a major role both within the firm and the sector as a former Brisbane Managing Partner, former national board member, former head of our National Energy and Resources Industry Group, and as the founder of our Hong Kong Office.

Since retiring from the Minter Ellison partnership in 2010, Denis has been appointed to numerous boards, including Gloucester Coal, Alligator Energy, Xanadu Mines which saw him make many trips to Mongolia, and most recently Murphy Pipe & Civil.

Denis is also a member of the Advisory Board of the University of Queensland's Centre for International Minerals and Energy Law.

A frequent commentator on sector-wide developments, Denis' industry standing is internationally recognised with Chambers Asia Pacific lauding him as a 'Senior Statesman in Energy and Natural Resources'. 

Dawson and Lake Lindsay projects

Advised on the expansion of Anglo American's Dawson and Lake Lindsay projects involved capital expenditure in excess of $1b and required a contracting strategy that would ensure the procurement of coal preparation plants, long conveyors, crushing plants, and associated building and civil infrastructure. We helped Anglo establish several alliances, several EPCM contracts and a multitude of equipment and services procurement contracts.

$800m Discovery Point mixed use development

Acting for a wholly owned subsidiary of Australand Holdings Ltd on the A$800 million Discovery Point development at Wolli Creek in New South Wales. This 8-hectare mixed use development will feature residential apartments, commercial offices, an integrated retail centre and extensive public and private parklands. We are advising on procurement and OH&S strategies, drafting pro-forma and project specific documentation (such as consultancy agreements and design and construct contracts), assisting in the preparation of the tender conditions, advising on the tendering process and compiling documentation for tender.
