The global demand for energy and the effects of greenhouse gases on the environment have created a new paradigm – one that has become a significant challenge for governments, business and the community.
Minter Ellison recognised the growing importance of climate change more than a decade ago and we have been working with governments, mining and energy companies and the non-profit sector in Australia and New Zealand since the early 1990s, helping them navigate climate change issues.
Our specific experience covers:
-
carbon dioxide geosequestration projects
-
emissions trading schemes
-
carbon taxes
-
carbon sink legislation
-
forestry and avoided deforestation projects
-
securing greenhouse gas abatements and offsets
-
renewable energy projects (including wind, hydro, solar and bio gas) – development, financing and management
-
green building development and construction projects, including ratings systems
-
Australian Government's Greenhouse Friendly and Greenhouse Challenge Plus
-
Australian Government's 'Mandatory Renewable Energy Target' scheme and the 'Greenhouse Gas Abatement Program'
-
Australian Government's Energy Efficiency Opportunities legislation
-
Australian Government's Low Emission Technology Demonstration Fund
-
New South Wales Government's 'NGAC' scheme
-
Queensland Government's 13 per cent gas scheme.
As well as working with leading Australian and international clients to help them address climate change, as a firm we are committed to making our own contribution to this wider effort.
Since 2001, Minter Ellison has been a participant in the Australian Government's Greenhouse Challenge – a voluntary Federal Government initiative encouraging businesses to measure and reduce their emissions. Year-on-year we have consistently exceeded performance targets by implementing systems and practices to increase our energy efficiency and thereby reduce our greenhouse gas footprint.
We are also a supporter of Greenfleet Australia, a not-for-profit organisation planting native trees to offset CO2 emissions from vehicles, air travel, households and businesses.
