Biography

Ian has practised corporate and commercial law with the firm for more than 40 years, and stepped down as National Chairman of Partners in June 2003.

He has extensive experience in providing strategic legal and commercial advice to businesses and corporations in Australia and overseas. He has been involved in the negotiation and structuring of corporate and tax aspects of multinational joint ventures, mergers, acquisitions and takeovers. He has acted in many public company equity raisings and the negotiation of commercial transactions and company reconstructions. He is also a director of a number of publicly listed companies.

Ian is also our key adviser on all matters related to China. Ian led the successful initiative to obtain a licence for Minter Ellison to practise in China (Shanghai), and we are currently one of only four Australian firms licensed to do so. Ian has advised major Chinese and Japanese corporations on Australian joint ventures, corporate law and securities, in particular acquisitions, takeovers and capital raisings. He also advises Australian corporations and investors in formulating business strategies for Asia.

Ian is well recognised as a mediator in alternative dispute resolution. He has also been appointed at the request of corporations to mediate in large-scale commercial disputes.

In 2000, Ian was appointed by the Australian Government as Chairman of the Produce and Grocery Industry Code Administration Committee. The Committee developed a voluntary code to ensure efficient competition and fair trading practices in the industry.

Ian is currently non-executive Chairman of MaxiTRANS; non-executive Chairman of UCMS Group Ltd; a Director of the International Diabetes Institute; Chairman of the Produce and Grocery Industry Code Administration Committee; a non-executive Director of Helvetica (Australia) Pty Ltd; and non-executive Chairman of Recovcorp Pty Ltd.
