Australia's largest and leading law firm, MinterEllison, won the Innovation in People and Skills Award at the Financial Times Innovative Lawyer Awards for 2022.

MinterEllison is recognised for its innovation in the design and development of an integrated training program – Client Team Connector Program (CTC Program). The program is a first for the legal industry, and a new approach to training lawyers on the strategic and relationship components in client management.

Michelle Power, MinterEllison's Managing Partner, Markets, noted that the program is the result of the collaboration between our teams in the Markets and Talent Development groups and a group of our lawyers. They started with a vision and through insights and learnings from outside the profession, experience, and feedback, they developed what now has been recognised as an innovative client management program, incorporating both in team practical learning and a formal development program.

"I am immensely proud of the CTC program and the vision, commitment and collaboration of the team. Clients are experiencing the positive impacts of our CTC Program, as our CTCs work closely with client relationship partners to provide seamless service and build authentic relationships in many parts of our clients' business operations. Our lawyers and consultants are developing their commercial mindsets to assist their approach to a legal problem or risk to better assist clients with a solution."

"This is an example of the firm bringing together a diversity of skills and perspectives to develop an innovative program with lasting impact."

The CTC program is being rolled out across the firm's clients, and across industries, with over 90 Special Counsel, Senior Associates, and Associates. As more Client Team Connectors complete the program, more clients will reap the benefits.

MinterEllison was also a finalist in the following categories:

  • Innovation in Digital Legal Practice
  • Most Innovative Law Firm in Asia Pacific

The Financial Times Innovative Lawyer Awards are in their ninth year and celebrate innovations from over 25 law firms and inhouse teams in the region. The awards highlight agility, sustainability and accelerating digital transformation.
