Defamation, Libel and Media

MinterEllison’s industry leading lawyers have an in-depth knowledge and understanding of all forms of content and communications, including print, internet and broadcast media. We advise both public and private sector clients on media related issues including defamation, pre-publication advice, contempt, suppression orders, legislative restrictions on publication and advertising codes, managing reputation following negative publicity, together with ecommerce content issues, internet manuscript and programme content. Our team has handled, and continues to handle, a large number of defamation cases for both plaintiffs and defendants in all Australian jurisdictions.

A major part of our media practice is advising publishers, including providing pre-publication advice and acting in defamation court actions.

Through our involvement in some of the highest profile cases within Australia and before the High Court, our team knows when it is the appropriate time to resolve a complaint, if that is the best course. We appreciate that the costs and vicissitudes of defamation trials are significant and should generally be avoided.
