Sonja Read

Sonja has over 10 years experience working in the health and bioscience sectors, advising a range of clients including State and Federal Health Departments, private hospitals, public hospitals and Universities. She has qualifications in both law and science, including a Masters of Law in the fields of health law and bioethics from the University of Pennsylvania.

Sonja's practice is predominately in the health regulatory and compliance area. This area of practice is varied but commonly raises issues such as compliance with State and Federal privacy legislation and confidentiality obligations, and compliance with Medicare claiming requirements contained in the Health Insurance Act, National Healthcare Agreement and National Health Reform Agreement.

Sonja has completed secondments at the Legal Services Branch of the Department of Health and Ageing, Canberra where she was involved in legislative development and advising the Department in relation to aspects of the Health Insurance Act. She also completed a secondment to the Legal Unit of Queensland Health within corporate advisory, providing advice in relation to a range of commercial issues including contract review, funding agreements and clinical trials.

Personally controlled electronic health record (PCEHR)- legislative compliance

Advised the Commonwealth Department of Health and Ageing (DoHA) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) in relation to the privacy impact assessment for the personally controlled electronic health record (PCEHR) system and a legislative compliance assessment for the PCEHR System.
