Hydroflex Commercialising a product to take to the international market

25.07.2017 Sheena Jackson
They say you shouldn't reinvent the wheel, but why not start with the engine? Hydroflex is an emerging South Australian business, embarking on a journey to do just that. Through hydrogen enhanced combustion solutions, Hydroflex is capable of delivering fuel savings of over 15% and emission reductions in excess of 60%, to both commercial and domestic engines. Hopefully soon Hydroflex's technology will be fitted to the car you drive to work, the truck that delivers your groceries, and the generator that powers your house.

The innovative team at Hydroflex, Richard Connors, Ron Basset and Tiffany Young, aim to commercialise their product and expand internationally. They knew that in order to do this, they needed a plan to grow their business in a sustainable and commercially viable way. It's common for business operators to undervalue the importance of laying appropriate foundations, to develop a solid framework for business growth. But in the early stages of product development Hydroflex identified this need, and as a result they have invested time seeking advice and developing a strategy to empower them to achieve their goals.

Establishing a strong relationship with Richard, Ron and Tiffany was crucial to ensuring that the Hydroflex business was provided with the commercial advice it needed. No more. No less.

“When MinterEllison presented its Maximise package, we jumped at it. Not only did they present a solid legal team, but they took the time to understand our business objectives and provided practical advice without all of the bells and whistles that are not required by our business during this start-up phase.”
Richard Connors, Chief Technology Officer

Taking the time to meet with Hydroflex and understand their business, assisted our specialised small to medium enterprise (SME) team to determine how we could best add value to their business. Hydroflex wanted more than to just deal with experienced and capable lawyers - they required cost certainty and quick turnarounds. This was all possible through our team of specialists together with the fixed price services we offer.

With Hydroflex's vision and needs in mind, our discussions highlighted the need to establish a business framework that would allow Hydroflex to grow and tap into the international market. To achieve this, our team provided advisory legal support about:

  • attracting investors to the business;
  • how best to structure their fundraising and ensure compliance;
  • ensuring their valuable intellectual property is protected.

 As a result of the strong relationship that has been developed, our team continues to provide Hydroflex with targeted commercial advice that adds value and supports them while they grow their business and achieve their goals.
