Australia’s first proton therapy unit to be headquartered in Adelaide

The successful completion of funding arrangements for a new cancer treatment centre and medical research facility in North Terrace Adelaide, the Australian Bragg Centre, will house a proton therapy unit that will deliver technologically advanced and precise radiation therapy. It has the potential to contribute to the cure for a significant number of cancers.

The transaction brought together several parties from the public and private sectors including:

  • Commercial & General, as Owner and Developer;
  • South Australian Health and Medical Research Institute Limited (SAHMRI) and its subsidiary Australian Bragg Centre for Proton Therapy and Research Limited, being South Australia's first independent health and medical research institute;
  • The Commonwealth Bank of Australia
  • The Federal Government and State Government; and
  • Lendlease, as the Principal Contractor for the building.

MinterEllison acted for Commercial & General. Wissam Abwi, Partner, Transaction Services at MinterEllison said, “The negotiations of this transaction have been complex due to the various parties involved, the strike of a global pandemic and the lockdown of state borders for the first time since Federation. This outcome is a testament to the people, values and success of Commercial & General and all the parties involved".

"We were delighted to be able to support a project that offers such a significant contribution to health, research and education in not only South Australia but also the rest of the country."

The Project creates in excess of $1billion in economic activity, will provide some 1000+ constructions jobs in South Australia throughout construction, and has delivered significant direct private investment.

The MinterEllison team has been involved from the start of negotiations in 2018 and prepared and negotiated all transaction documents for the Australian Bragg Centre. Financial close of the transaction occurred, and construction commenced, on 5 June 2020.
