Kathryn Finlayson
Partner, Brisbane
Independently recognised as a leading commercial litigator, dispute resolution and competition law specialist, I have more than 20 years of experience acting in high stakes commercial, regulatory and competition matters for major corporates and government agencies across highly regulated industries.

I help major corporates and government agencies across highly regulated industries, such as energy, resources, property, government, health and education, to navigate disputes that carry significant financial, operational and reputational risk.

Known for my ability to simplify complex legal, commercial and regulatory issues into clear strategy, I lead clients through disputes that have the potential to reshape markets or significantly impact business operations.

My experience includes matters that test regulatory frameworks and require sensitive stakeholder management. This has included successfully leading the defence of Stanwell Corporation in the Queensland Energy class action, the largest claim for misuse of market power ever filed in Australia and acting in the largest restitution claim filed in the Supreme Court of Queensland (where claims exceeded $1 billion in total) resulting in an out-of-court settlement on favourable terms for our client.

Clients rely on my regulatory investigation and enforcement experience including when under investigation by the ACCC, the AER, ASIC and other domestic regulators and in subsequent proceedings.

I advise clients on all aspects of the Australian Consumer Law, negotiating enforceable undertakings with the ACCC in respect of alleged contraventions and defending clients in proceedings commenced by aggrieved third parties alleging contravention of the ACL.

I am the Deputy Chair (Queensland) of the Law Council of Australia Competition Law Committee and Chair of the Queensland Law Society Competition and Consumer Law Committee. In 2023 I was appointed by the Chief Justice as a Councillor of the Incorporated Council of Law Reporting for the State of Queensland (ICLRQ). I am also a member of Dean's Advisory Board at the University of Queensland Law School and on the Board of the University of Queensland Law School Alumni Association.

As the partner responsible for the firm's relationship with Queensland Ballet, I have advised on all aspects of corporate governance, contracts, media and intellectual property. Deeply committed to advancing women in the legal profession, I was the President of the Women Lawyers Association of Queensland (2011-2013) and remain an active member continuing to mentor emerging female lawyers. I was the Chair of the Board of St Ursula's College Toowoomba from 2023 to 2025 after being appointed to the Board in 2019. I served on the Audit and Risk Management Committee of the Queensland Catholic Education Commission from 2023 to 2026.
