Sonja Ilic is a specialist advisor on mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and the development of projects in the resources, energy and mining sectors.
Through 17 years of dedicated practice in the sector, Sonja has extensive experience negotiating and advising on joint venture documentation, agreements for the sale and purchase of interests in joint ventures, and undertaking both vendor and purchaser due diligence.
She regularly advises on the development and operation of resources projects as well as drafting and negotiating construction and procurement contracts.
Sonja is a long-standing advisor to Anglo American, and a member of the Australian Mining and Petroleum Lawyers Association.
Sonja’s practice also draws upon valuable in-house experience through several secondments with Anglo American in Corporate Counsel and General Counsel roles.

Sonja has been involved in drafting joint venture agreements for the development and operation of new mines as well as for exploration projects. Her experience also extends to advising on issues arising out of long standing joint venture arrangements.
Sonja has acted for major resources clients in both the acquisition and divestment of coal projects, interests in mining joint ventures and operating coal mines, involving conducting purchaser or vendor due diligence (as required) and undertaking the sale process involving negotiation of sale and purchase agreements through the completion process.
Sonja's experience includes providing advice to coal mining clients on issues arising under their mining leases and with respect to operational issues in respect of their coal mining interests. She has undertaken several secondments with Anglo American in both the Corporate Counsel and General Counsel role in which such advice was provided on a daily basis to various mine sites.
Sonja's expertise encompasses drafting and negotiation of procurement contracts for the acquisition of large scale mining equipment and services by coal mine owners.
